J. Stephen Kurtz

J. Stephen Kurtz, M.D. 92, Prominent Philadelphia Obstetrician and Gynecologist J. Stephen Kurtz, M.D., 92, a prominent obstetrician and gynecologist of Philadelphia, PA, died peacefully at his Ambler home on September 30, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Jane (Grace) Kurtz. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Katrina Kurtz Shuptar of Philadelphia, PA, Gretchen Kurtz Mertz (David) of Fleetwood, PA, Laura Jane Kurtz Buckalew (Edward) of Narberth, PA, two grandsons J. Alexander Shuptar and Daniel B. Shuptar both of Philadelphia, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife Bessie (Polk) Kurtz, a sister Jean Kurtz Esser, and a brother Horace Frame Kurtz. Dr. Kurtz was born in Reading, PA on October 10, 1920 to the late Harvey G. and Helen (Frame) Kurtz. He was a graduate of Reading High School, Franklin and Marshall College and Temple University Medical School. He was a veteran of the US Navy serving from 1946-48. Dr. Kurtz practiced obstetrics and gynecology for more than 50 years, delivering over 6000 babies, and was one of the first obstetricians in Philadelphia to practice the Leboyer method of natural childbirth, and was loved by his patients. In his early career, he was affiliated with Germantown, Abington, and Roxborough Hospitals, and later with Chestnut Hill Hospital until his retirement in 1999. Dr. Kurtz was an Eagle Scout, president of the Sigma Pi Fraternity at Franklin and Marshall College, and a member of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, the American Medical Association, and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He was a past member of the Philadelphia Cricket Club. He enjoyed history, opera, puzzles, and was an accomplished violinist. Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Service on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Emil J. Ciavarelli Family Funeral Homes, 951 E. Butler Pike, Ambler, PA. The family will be receiving guests on Friday from 5-8 p.m. and Saturday from 9-10 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be private.
