Jane Hedges

Jane Hedges Jane Brackett Hedges died March 28, 2012 in Chicago following a brief hospitalization after a fall at home. The photo is from 3/7/12. It was taken after Jane swam in the Caribbean Ocean while on a cruise with daughter Barb and son-in-law Len in celebration of her 85th birthday. Born February 27, 1927, Jane was the only child of Col. Max A and Elizabeth Updike Brackett. She grew up in Madison, WI but graduated from high school in Savanna, IL in 1945 while her dad served at the Ordinance Depot there. Jane graduated from the UW-Madison with a degree in journalism in 1949. She was a lifelong Badger fan, in addition to supporting the Illini, the KU Jayhawks and the Temple Owls, plus following the White Sox, Phillies, and Cubs and professional football and basketball. Following her graduation, Jane was first secretary for the new meteorology department at UW. Her boss introduced her to his cousin-in-law, Bob A. Hedges, whom she eventually followed to the U of I, becoming secretary at the Illini Union (and Bob's unpaid dissertation typist), and also social secretary for the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. Bob and Jane wed in Madison at Pres. House on June 16, 1951. Their first child, Barbara Jan, was born in 1958. They built a house in Savoy, IL in 1960 and lived there until Bob took a position at Temple University in 1967, when they moved to Ambler. Their daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Beth), was born in 1968. After Bob's death in 1999, Jane moved to Atlanta in 2003 to be close to daughter Barb, before moving to Beth's place in Chicago in 2005. Jane sang soprano in school, church and community choirs throughout her life. A Girl Scout as a child, she led troops for her girls, and won an award for her work at the Greater Philadelphia Council. She and Bob ran the hospitality network for homeless folks at First Presbyterian Church of Ambler, where Jane was both a deacon (ministry of compassion) and an elder (on the ruling board). She also ran FPC's clothing donation ministry (Mrs. Kunkle's Closet) for ten years. Jane appreciated all of nature: plants, rocks, seashells, birds and weather-the wilder the better. She loved travel and was a lifelong reader. As evidenced by her photo and memento collections, however, her greatest delight was family: daughter Beth Hedges of Chicago and daughter and son-in-law the Revs. Barb and Len Hedges-Goettl (Kenosha, WI); grandchildren Nathaniel Hedges-Goettl (Oberlin College, OH), Elizabeth (Izzy) Hedges-Goettl of NYC, Robert Hedges-Goettl (Philadelphia), and the Rev. Katy (Hedges-Goettl) Stenta, Katy's husband Anthony, and great-grandchildren Franklin (3), Westley (2) and Ashburn (5 months) of Albany, NY. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 27, at 4 PM at First Presbyterian Church-Ambler, 4 S. Ridge Pike (corner of Butler Pike).
