Janis Plostenieks

Janis Plostnieks, 80, of Blue Bell, died on November 29, 2013 at Holy Redeemer Hospital. He was the husband of Gunta (Keris) Plostnieks for 49 years. He was born in Liepaja, Latvia on August 27, 1933 to the late Fricis and Anna (Grundmanis) Plostnieks. After receiving his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Yale University, Dr. Plostnieks was a chemist and the Corporate Director of Science and Technology at Johnson and Johnson, where he worked for 40 years. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, New York Academy of Sciences, and Sigma Xi. He held over 20 patents in the area of Organic Chemistry and was awarded the Grindel Medal, Latvia's highest honor for pharmaceutical research. He was active at Grace Baptist Church of Blue Bell and First Latvian Baptist Church of Philadelphia. Dr. Plostnieks was on the Board of Directors of Eastern University and the USA/Israel Biotechnology Council, Secretary of the American Latvian Baptist Association, and Chairman of the Latvian Baptist Theological Seminary in Riga, Latvia. He is survived by his wife Gunta, daughters Daina Plostnieks-Redpath and Julia Plostnieks, son-in-law Keith Redpath, and grandsons Peter and Matthew Redpath. Relatives and friends were invited to his Funeral Service on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Grace Baptist Church of Blue Bell, 437 Skippack Pike, Blue Bell, PA 19422. The Viewing was held from 9:30-10:30 AM at the church and Interment was in George Washington Memorial Park. Donations in Dr. Plostnieks' name can be made to World Vision International or .
