Ann Estelle Gehman Obituary
ANN ESTELLE COOLEY GEHMAN, age 73, passed away on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014 at her home in Fort Washington, surrounded by her loved ones. She was the beloved wife of Philip A. Gehman, Sr. for 49 years and mother to her three children: Philip A. Gehman, Jr., of Roslyn; Jennifer G. Branner, of Westminster, MD; and Elizabeth G. Nickless, of Fairfax, VA. Born in Williamsport, PA, Ann was the daughter of Paul B. Cooley, head of the history department at Williamsport High School and Mildred G. Cooley, a home economics teacher, also at Williamsport High School. Ann received an A.B. degree in American Studies from Mount Holyoke College and began her career as an English teacher at Lansdowne-Aldan Junior High School. She settled in Philadelphia, and married Philip A. Gehman, an electrical engineer, in 1964. Ann and Phil later moved to Bala Cynwyd, and eventually settled in Fort Washington, where they have lived for 41 years. Ann continued her teaching career as a preschool educator at Twin Spring Farm Day School in Ambler. Later, she pursued her graduate degree in Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania. Upon earning her Master's in Social Work, Ann found a position as clinical therapist at Wordsworth Academy in Fort Washington, a residential treatment center for children and adolescents. She also served as a therapist at Penn Foundation in Sellersville and saw clients through private practice. A breast cancer survivor, Ann volunteered for various cancer support groups. She also enjoyed regular meetings with her family therapy networking group. She was a longtime member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Whitemarsh and most recently, at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Abington, and served in the church choirs at Ambler Presbyterian and St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Bryn Mawr. Ann enjoyed spending time with her children and their spouses, and her seven grandchildren: Keith, Erica, Tyler, Jackson, Natalie, Carter and Samuel. In addition to reading and caring for her pets, one of Ann's greatest joys was spending time in Ocean City, NJ, where she spent many summers with her family relaxing on the beach, listening to the ocean and dining at Oves Restaurant.
