Susan Thatcher Obituary
Susan Jobes Thatcher of Gwynedd Valley, PA passed from this life on Sunday, January 12. She died peacefully at home with her family. Susan was born in Teaneck, NJ in 1938 to Kathleen Blizzard Jobes and John H. Jobes. She was graduated from Dumont High School and earned a BA from Cornell University. In 1960, Susan married Richard W. Thatcher, Jr. Susan was a servant leader, giving generously of her time and skill. She was President of Pi Beta Phi sorority at Cornell, served on the Vestry at The Church of the Messiah, and was Vice President for Germantown Academy's Board of Trustees. Susan also lent her efforts to delivering Meals on Wheels, teaching with the Green Circle, and selling at Messiah's Belfry Bargains Thrift Shop. Gardening and flower arranging were a lifelong love. A 28-year member of the Norristown Garden Club, Susan served as its President from 1993-1995. With the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, Susan served as Clerk of Judges for the Philadelphia Flower Show. As a long-time summer resident of Long Beach Island, Susan supported the programs of the LBI Foundation for the Arts and Sciences, both as a student of printmaking, and chair of its Annual House Tour. Throughout, Susan was a journalist - eloquent, articulate, and accurate. She wrote and edited for the Dumont High School Periscope newspaper, her Cornell freshman class newspaper, The Cornellian yearbook, the Messiah Messenger newsletter, the Norristown Garden Club newsletter, and the Keystone Gardener, the quarterly publication of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania. Susan was a founding member of the Chestnut Hill Book Club. Along with reading, she shared a love of travel, photography, music and tennis with family and friends. She was a favorite "second mom" to many. In everything, Susan was full of grace, kindness, strength, creativity, humor, generosity, and love. She brought out those characteristics in everyone she met. Susan is survived by her loving husband Richard W. Thatcher, Jr., her children Kate Barnwell (Nicholas) of Harrison, NY, Jill Sautkulis (Michael) of Norwalk, CT, and Andrews Thatcher (Nicole) of Narberth, PA, grandchildren Will, Harry, Richie, Katherine, James and Sophie, her brother John H. Jobes, Jr. (Carol), sister Deborah Jobes Sutherland, their children, and her brother-in-law, James A. Thatcher. Her family expresses deep gratitude to the extraordinary women who dedicated their loving care to Susan: Mary Beth McNally, Betty Ann Schmidt, Theresa Fulton, Audrey Harris-Mensah, Kathy Balbier, and Sarah King Granquist. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Church of the Messiah, 1001 DeKalb Pike, Lower Gwynedd, PA 19002. Beginning at 1:00 pm, Susan's family will greet visitors in the Church. Reception and celebration of her life will follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations to Church of the Messiah (www.messiahgwynedd.org) or Philabundance (www.philabundance.org, 3616 South Galloway St. Phila, PA 19148) are appreciated. William R.
