Obituary Condolences

Larry J. Opdyke 77, of Souderton, died Friday, October 11, 2013 at Grand View Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Gay (Adams) Opdyke, his wife of 51 years. Born September 27, 1936 in Souderton, he was the son of the late LeRoy and Lovera (Hollenbach) Opdyke and was a lifetime resident of the borough. Larry was a 1954 graduate of Souderton High School. After graduating from Albright College, Mr. Opdyke began his career as a math teacher with Souderton Area School District, a position he held for 38 years until his retirement in January 1997. Among many other professional accomplishments, he was proud to have started the high school calculus program. During summers and school breaks, Larry worked with Trout Brothers Concrete, Inc., Telford. Mr. Opdyke was a dedicated civil servant. He served as Ward Leader for the Souderton Republican Committee for many years. He was also active with the Police Civil Service Commission, Souderton, and was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Harleysville, for over 30 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Jane G. Hagan and her husband, Bruce, of Telford, Thomas A. Opdyke and his wife, Sophie, of New Rochelle, NY, and Megan D. Owens and her husband, Andrew, of Philadelphia; eight grandchildren, Matthieu, Lucie, Gabrielle, A.J., Emily, Jonah, Bobbie Jane, and Wesley; and four sisters, Pauline Kriebel of Lansdale, Arlene Bergey of Lansdale, Shirley Cooper of Harleysville, and Beverly Ketterer of Dallas, TX. Above all else, he will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Relatives and friends may call after 10 a.m. Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 310 Covenant Lane, Harleysville, PA 19438, followed by the Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Burial will be private in Hillside Cemetery, Souderton. Arrangements are by the Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Mr. Opdyke's memory to Covenant Presbyterian Church, address above, or Highland Park Campmeeting Association, 415 Highland Park Rd., Sellersville, PA 18960.
