James W. Stratton 75, a retired investment advisor from Philadelphia, died Wednesday, April 18 in Boca Grande, Florida. He was the loving husband of Arlene (Mostertz) to whom he was married for over 54 years. Born December 18, 1936 in Philadelphia he was the son of the late Frank and Myrtle (Soehle) Stratton. Mr. Stratton received his B.S. in Geophysics from Penn State University, and his M.B.A. at The Harvard Business School. In 1960, Mr. Stratton joined the Philadelphia-based investment counseling firm of Cooke & Bieler, where he subsequently became a Vice President, and Director. In 1965, he joined Drexel & Co. in the Investment Advisory Department. By 1970, he was elected President and Chief Executive Officer of Drexel Firestone, Inc. In 1972, he founded Stratton Management Company, an investment management firm for individuals and institutions, and Stratton Growth Fund, a no-load mutual fund. Since the inception, Stratton followed a traditional "value" investment philosophy, and was known for his pithy Stratton Letter, which summarized the current economic outlook. During his career, Mr. Stratton served on various boards including UGI Corp., SEI Corp, Quaker Chemical, BE&K, Teleflex, Alco Standard, and Meadowood Retirement Community. He held the distinction of being the youngest person since 1826 to be appointed a university trustee of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Stratton served as Chairman of the Board from 1990-94, and he was given Jefferson's Award of Merit in 2008 for dedicated service and contribution to the university. In addition to running his own firm for over 35 years, Jim and his family raised Christmas trees on their property in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. Jim was also an avid reader. His keen intellect and no-nonsense personality will be sorely missed. Along with his wife, he is survived by his three daughters and sons-in law, Sue and Pat McGinnis, Jeanne and Jeff Jenkins, Carol and Jim Beers. Much love and conversation was offered to the 8 wonderful grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Frank "Bud" Stratton. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 AM, on Friday, April 27, 2012 at Central Schwenkfelder Church, 2111 Valley Forge Rd. (Rt.363), Lansdale, PA 19446, where friends may call from 10-11:30 AM.
