COVENTS, Elsie May née Vokey
(Luchuk, Pavia)
June 27, 1918 – February 5, 2014
Born in Lachine, Quebec, eldest daughter of John William Vokey and Caroline Chipman.
Survived by her beloved children George (Joanne), Nishe Catherine (Nigel Turner), Richard (Meta Maclean) and Sandra. And by precious grandchildren Cheryl (Dana), Stephen, Holly (Bob), Michael (Abby), Gregory (Louise), Brenda, David (Samantha), Deborah (Laurie), Richard (Cynthia), Gerry, Jennifer (Matt) and her darling great- grandchildren Jonathan, Michael, Jesse, Aaron, Myka, Tyler, Mason, Adam, Erik and Lora. Also survived by her adored and adoring sister Caroline and brother Harold (Ruth) and many admiring nieces and nephews in the Vokey, Champagne, Luchuk and Pavia families.
Predeceased by husbands George Luchuk, Tony Pavia and Honoree Rene Covents and by siblings William (Pat), James (Lillian), John (Mary), Frederick (Doris) and Selena Vokey , granddaughter Katherine, daughter- in-law Charlotte and son in-law David. Elsie was proud of her Newfoundland heritage and loved being with both her extended families, known to all as a generous, kind and wise woman.
Required to leave school at age twelve to help with the family, she didn't let that stop her from learning – whether it was how to lay a table, bake, opera or current events and politics, Elsie learned about it. Never one to focus on her mistakes, she always grew from them. She was able to adapt to new times and new ideas while holding onto some of the timeless values she learned. Elsie was generous to a fault: even in hard times, she'd get a bag of groceries to some neighbour or family member in need. Hers was always a home to just pop in for a cup of tea, homemade cookies or a Xmas eve spread.
Coming from a long line of card sharks, she loved the family or friend gatherings that included cribbage, nines, 31, euchre and rummy, along with feasts, raucous laughter and just a little gambling. Elsie spent 29 winters in St. Petersburg, Florida and was a champion shuffle boarder. Elsie loved to travel, most of it in her later years. Elsie had friends in Florida, Etobicoke, Lachine and in her last home, Tru Davidson Acres, Toronto. The family wishes to thank the kind and generous staff at Tru Davidson.

Dear George, Niche, Richard and Sandra: Since talking to you last Sunday evening, Sandra you have been constantly in our thoughts. Aunt Elsie was truly a gracious lady and I remember many a wonderful dinner at her home in Lachine. I know that Uncle Tony's years spent with her and all of you were very happy ones. I'm sorry that I could not come to the funeral, but someday in the next little while John and I will come to Niagara Falls and have a good visit with you, Sandra. Our love to all of you: Your east coast cousins, John and Rozanne Webb(Maddalena Pavia's daughter). We have a beautiful granddaughter-Maddalena Webb and so goes the circle of life!
