I loved all my teachers at MCHS. When I was elevated to Fellow by the RCA I included Mr Kelly who was my chemistry teacher. As class of 1974 during carnival week he wore his quilt and showed off those wonderful legs.

Dear Anna & family,

We are thinking of you at this sad time. Please accept our deepest sympathy. We remember Malcolm's sense of humour and the way he touched each of our lives in his unique style. May fond memories assist you in your grief.

Malcolm Kelly was my Technical Drawing 1 teacher at Malcolm Campbell High School in 1965.

At the time, the education system was orchestrated towards academic anticipation, and I was relegated to the "Dummies Class". We were not allowed to take Latin, so we were coerced into taking technical drawing, metal and wood-working shop, auto shop and typing. In retrospect, each of these courses has served me very well.

Mr Kelly asked me one day what I intended to do when I grew up and I said I wanted to be an Architect. He reached over to my arm and gave it a paternal squeeze but said nothing.

In the Technical Drawing 2 class in grade 10, Mr Kelly again asked me what were my plans, and I repeated that I wanted to be an Architect, but I mentioned that the school did not think I was up to it and would not permit me take a required course, Trigonometry. Mr Kelly intervened on my behalf and they allowed me to take the class, which I did well enough at.

The most memorable moment, however, was when I specifically went to Mr Kelly and stated that everyone was telling me that I would never be an architect (including my own parents), yet Mr Kelly told me to go visit the School of Architecture at McGill and talk to the students there and find out what I would need to do to achieve that goal. Most important excursion of my life.

At the various high school dances, Mr Kelly was usually there as one of the chaperones and always stole my hidden cigarettes with the same phrase each and every time..."Oh the corona". To this day I don't know if he actually smoked, but I lost my cigarettes.

I did in fact graduate from McGill Architecture, and have had a very successful and fulfilling career. It is due only to the support that Mr Kelly so generously provided for me, and the confidence and to a degree, the sense of arrogance that Mr. Kelly aroused in me.

Upon learning of the sad news, I actually went back to review the work which I had submitted to him for his classes and reflected upon seeing his comments and grades he gave me. Yes, I actually still have them.

I learned well from Mr Kelly. With my own daughters now at 14 & 17, I am using his wisdom to simply outline to them the opportunities and the path that may be taken, not allowing them to be affected by the premature assumptions of others, so that they may fulfill their own dreams.

Mr Kelly was my mentor and I am sure that there are many others who have benefitted, and I will be forever grateful.

My thoughts are with you Anna and Family.

Malcolm had perhaps one of the most pawky sense of humour that I have ever come across, always up for the one liner! - We will all miss him.
