Ronald SKLAR Obituary

Published by Monteal Gazette on Mar. 30, 2013.
SKLAR, Ronald
With dignity and grace, peacefully with his wife by his side on Friday, March 29, 2013 surrounded by love. He was a deeply loving husband to Adrianne Levine, his wife and best friend since they met on a blind date fifty-one years ago. A devoted father to his two daughters, Alem and Dessalen, whom he treasured as individuals and showered with unconditional love. He will also be missed by his son in law, Graham Wood, who has lost a spirited debating partner.
Ron - known as Zaza to his grandchildren Jada (11), Zev (9), and Nate (6) – was both a playmate and friend (and baseball guru), remembered for two generations of playing Slow Poke Sally and Speedy Sam, and for hour long bed time stories and indulging trips to the Sutton Flea Market.
Ron was a dual citizen, and will be missed south of the border by his U.S. family, by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harvey and Linda Levine, and his cousins, Harvey, Jeffrey and Steve Siegel and his stickball buddies, the "Hawks" from Montgomery Avenue in the Bronx.
Remembered as a passionate, dedicated and humorous law professor at McGill, where he taught for thirty-seven years, he put his students first, earning the John W. Durnford Award for Teaching Excellence. He also served for over ten years as the Ethics Consultant for the Douglas Hospital.
A lover and protector of animals from the majestic to the minuscule, Ron created and taught the first course on Animal law in Canada. He will be missed by his pug Chas, as well as all the many birds and squirrels he loyally fed every summer.
Ron grew up in the Bronx, and was the first graduate of Brooklyn Law School to be accepted into Yale Law Graduate School. After meeting and marrying his wife Adrianne, they moved to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where they lived for five years, teaching law at the Haile Selassie i University. The family moved to Montreal from Addis in 1973 when Ron received a law professor position at McGill University. He became a well-known voice on CBC radio and CTV news, both for his legal commentary and baseball insights.
His travels did not end there; in 2007-2008 he went to Banda Aceh, Indonesia, to conduct Seminars on the law, where help was needed after the Tsunami.
His family and friends will remember a man with an open, kind and accepting heart, whose beauty radiated from within and touched all those around him. Even in illness, he was able to shine to his caregivers at the Jewish General Hospital who regularly told his family that he was a truly special man and they were blessed to have known him. Ron will be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews, colleagues, students and friends.
The family would like to thank doctors April Shamy, David Melnychuk, Michael Dworkin and the residents and staff of 7 Northwest and 4 Northwest for their sensitivity and exceptional care.
Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Sunday, March 31 at 1:45 p.m. Burial at the Reconstructionist Dorshei Emet Congregation Section, Eternal Gardens Cemetery, Beaconsfield. Due to the festival of Passover, shiva commences the evening of Tuesday, April 2, and will continue through Friday, April 5 at Ron and Adrianne's home. The family will also be receiving visitors immediately following burial until Sunday evening, and on Monday from 1:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers Ron would have appreciated donations either to the Fauna Foundation (www.faunafoundation.org) which provides a sanctuary for abandoned chimpanzees (humans are lucky enough to be 98% chimpanzee, as Ron used to say) or to the Jewish General Hospital Foundation, (514) 340-8251, where he received fantastic care.

I learned only now the sad sad news of Professor Sklar's passing. I was a student back in 1986-1990. I have the fondest memories of Professor Sklar. He was so funny, so engaging and so engaged with his students. I'm sure it is because of him and his ground-breaking course on Mental Health Law that I have spent much of my professional life representing and advocating for the rights of psychiatric patients. What a loss. My deepest sympathies to his family.

I just learned (this late time) that one of my favourite professors and people at McGill Law has passe don. I am very saddened by this. Professor Sklar was wonderful, brilliant and entertaining. He influenced me so much that I have spent more than 30 years as a Criminal Defence lawyer (amongst other areas of practice) looking for those esoteric issues in many of my cases. I looked forward to his classed and have nothing but great memories from all his lectures. Perhaps he is somewhere special now playing ball with some of the great Dodgers? Sorry for the family's loss. A true mensch.

What a great guy and what a great life! I was lucky enough to be taught criminal law by Professor Sklar, and then double lucky enough to have had the opportunity to teach with his lovely wife Adrienne at Concordia in the early 90s. Both spoke of the other with such high regard and obvious love. It's always such a pleasure to be surrounded by passionate people who love their work, being with people, who are highly engaged and who project this energy back out into the world, making it a better place. Professor Sklar was one of these rare wonderful individuals.

I'm very late to be hearing about Ron's death but deeply moved. Ron worked as Ethicist at Douglas for years where his humour and insight were deeply appreciated.Whales from a kayak were once part of Ron's joyful experience of the natural world. Missing Ron.

Professor Sklar was perhaps the professor I got to know best while at McGill and definitely among the biggest influences. I had great appreciation for Professor Sklar and his classes. I feel privileged to have known him and to have spoken to him outside of class too. He was always patient and interested in our thoughts and careers despite having taught so many. And he made sur ethat every single lecture pushed us to think and consider what we would not have without his guidance. Mr. Sklar was not only a profoundly good and kind man, he was an inspiring and patient professor and one of the few I will remember as having made a mark, as having made me grow. It is not only those who know him who have suffered a loss but the legal profession. I will strive to make him proud.

I want to express my sincerest condolences to his family. I hope that you are doing OK, given the circumstances.

Professor Sklar was a delight to study with. He taught what is normally dispensed as staid law with eyes and mind open to new interpretations. I am delighted to have shared my learning with him. I was lucky enough to have him as a reviewer of my application to McGill, and it was because of his fierce humanity that I was accepted into the Faculty. I am forever grateful. Thank you, Professor, you opened up a world to me. To his family and friends, courage in the short term and good strong memories for the long term.

Ron was a wonderful help to us at CBC Radio and TV in Montreal. He was always willing to come on air and explain legal issues in a way that was compelling and clear, even to people (like myself) with no legal background. As a journalist, I got to know him a little outside the interviews: we talked pugs, chess and The Beatles. He will be missed as an expert and a lovely person.

Adrianne, Alem, the kids, and Graham and I would like to thank everyone for sending in these beautiful messages and memories. They mean a lot to us to read and allow us to see what an impact my father had on so many lives. For those of you who could not come to his funeral, we have uploaded the audio file on YouTube (under Ron Sklar), as many of my father's family and friends are from the US and were not able to be with us.

Ron was a joy to have as a professor, always prepared, always full of life and humor, willing to debate and engage in a respectful discussion. He made complicated things simple; and opening day for Ron was always a day of joy. I was so fortunate to have had Ron as my professor for two classes and as my independent essay advisor. A wonderful teacher who made a lasting impact on his students. My sincere heartfelt condolences on his passing.

He will be missed.

VERY SADDENED to learn today of the passing of McGill Law Professor Ronald Sklar. Professor Sklar was my teacher in three criminal law/ evidence courses at McGill and I thought the world of him. He took the law very seriously, but not himself. This was an important lesson he thought me, and one I have tried to live by my entire professional life. He made the law fun, engaging and relevant. God Bless you, Professor Sklar. Safe travels to the other side.....
