Bruno MITAL Obituary

Published by Monteal Gazette on Jul. 26, 2014.

MITAL, Bruno
1964 - 2014
In the early hours of Sunday morning, July 20, 2014, Montreal lost one of the most positive people on the planet...as well as an awesome Elvis impersonator.
Bruno Mital was a beautiful soul whose day was not complete unless he made several people laugh and countless others feel good about themselves. He died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 49.
He was known for his non-judgemental acceptance and respect for everyone who crossed his path, his three-cheek kisses, booming radio voice and incredible love of life. As his wife said, "Bruno is the happiest stage IV pancreatic cancer patient doctors have ever met." He was also very philosophical about his diagnosis. "The luckiest guy in the world just got unlucky," he said.
Throughout his 16-month battle, he was brave, stoic and unflinching in his determination to "kick this cancer in the butt."
With his ability to inspire and motivate people, Bruno devoted most of his working life to non-profit organizations such as Kids Help Phone and CCS. Most recently, he focused on his greatest passion, helping others achieve their dreams through his work as a life coach and mentor. He maintained strong links with Dawson College throughout his life and was the chair of Dawson's Board of Governors for almost three years, until his diagnosis of cancer.
Bruno's death will leave a massive hole in the lives of hundreds of people who loved his spirit, his exuberance and optimism. He will be desperately missed by his soul mate and partner of almost 25 years, Kelly Wilton, and their beloved 8-year-old son, Max Garth Mital. His memory will be cherished by his parents Jacques and Marie-Martine Mital; brother Pierre Mital (Melanie Nixon) and children Kayleigh, Sienna and Juliet; sister Brigitte Mital (Romolo Finelli) and children Marina and Nicolas; and his cousin Sibylle Aussems.
He was a son, brother and friend to his "other family," mother-in-law Pat Wilton; sisters- in-law Naomi Wilton (David Walker) and their son Ryan, Katherine Wilton (Niall Crotty) and their children Eric and Sarah. He will be fondly remembered by his extended family in France, Western Canada and Northern Ireland. He was predeceased by his father-in- law, Garth Wilton.
His family would like to thank the oncology staff at the Jewish General Hospital for putting up with his quirky humour and occasional swear words (he was a man not afraid of death but terrified of those needles nurses kept poking him with). We would especially like to thank his oncologist Dr. Petr Kavan, who we all trusted implicitly with Bruno's care, nurse Daphnée LAmoussenéry for being as positive and hopeful as the rest of his "army" as well as the staff at the CLSC de Benny Farm.
We greatly appreciated the compassionate care Bruno received from the doctors, nurses, orderlies and volunteers at the Palliative Care Unit of the Montreal General Hospital. Dr. Krista Lawlor's gentle approach made a very tough time bearable and Dr. Manuel Borod's guidance helped us make difficult decisions near the end.
In the final weeks of Bruno's illness, he had to undergo a blood transfusion and we learned of his blood type for the first time. It was "B positive."
The date, time and location of the Memorial to celebrate Bruno's life will be announced in The Gazette on Saturday, August 23, 2014. Donations can be made to the oncology department of the Jewish General Hospital or the Palliative Care Unit of the Montreal General Hospital.

I remember Bruno from CRLT (viger campus 1981-1986), where he took a fellow classmate under his wing, showing compassion. It has been very heartwarming to see this compassion continued in his work, and for the well being of others.

I met Bruno at Dawson College when I was going to school there and he was the most positive person I knew. He became a good friend and was a like a big brother to me. It is with great sadness that I just recently learned of his passing. A bright light has gone out in this world and heaven has gained a wonderful angel. He will surely be missed and my thoughts and prayers are with his wife and son and all his family.

With great sadness, I heard about Bruno's passing. My deepest condolences. What a beautiful, wonderful, funny man he was who made an instant impression as a warm and caring person! My memories of meeting him have stayed with me over the years since he first came into your life, Kelly. May you both find the strength to carry his bright light and memory in the times ahead. Kelly and Max I am so very sorry for your loss. I knew Bruno to be a most incredibly thoughtful, kind and solution oriented employer. To say that Bruno contributed greatly to the community and expertly guided and directed his staff would be a grand understatement. And, what a wonderful contribution to the world that three of you became family.
With all of my will and might, I offer you both my sincerest wish for peace and serenity.

My deepest condolences to the extended Mital family. I still remember him fondly from the Dawson years. His joie de vivre, his unconditional acceptance of everyone and his gregarious and easy nature are traits that continued to serve him well. The world has certainly lost one of the good ones, but his legacy will continue to positively impact the lives of those that were priviledged enough to have known him. Rest in peace, Bruno.

My deepest sympathies. I met Bruno at Dawson College in '85. He helped get me acclimated in a new sometimes stressful environment that a first year student can go through. Bruno had a heart of gold and first and foremost gave me hope and helped me realise that the world does indeed still have good, caring people in it, in the most cynical and rebellious time of life, added some real perspective and positivity when I was 17. His honesty and compassion was second to none. His acceptance and respect and humour was epic. He took it upon himself to listen to the little guy and brought out the best in people. Did I mention all the laughs? Man did we have a lot of laughs. We re-aquainted recently at the N.D.G. YMCA. I actually heard him before I saw him and knew instantly who it was, even after 28yrs. I saw his face in my mind before I found him in the weight room. He totally remembered me too and we reminisced and had great conversations everytime we crossed paths at the gym. I feel priviledged to have know him. Much love to his family and friends.

Carol again.....
I just felt compelled to share a bit more :)
My Dad, Fred, turned 85 years old the same day Bruno passed on. Dad was diagnosed with terminal duodenal cancer in March. Dad has always considered himself a lucky man. Dad too is "B positive"....and our family lives by it. Dr. Borod is his doctor at the Montreal General, Dr. Lawlor was my mother in law's doctor when she passed over 7 years ago... these doctors quite simply, Angels on earth!!
When our day inevitably comes, I hope my Dad meets up with your Bruno :))

Dear Kelly and Max,
I just heard of Bruno's death and am overwhelmed by the tremendous loss. Your wording in the obituary captures his spirit and I couldn't find better words to describe his effect on those around him. Bruno and I worked together on the Dawson board. He was VP when I was president and took over graciously when it was my turn to move on. We worked closely together and I know how important you and Max were in his life - you were everything to him! Please accept my deepest condolences and know that Bruno will maintain a special place in my heart.

Rest in peace Bruno

God saw Bruno getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put His arms around him and whispered "come to me." With tearful eyes you watched him, and saw Bruno pass away. Although we loved him dearly, we could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands at rest. God broke your hearts to prove to you, He only takes the best.
Bruno always had a smile for everyone.
You have our sincere condolences.

I had the privilege to be part of Bruno's H.S.I. cohort. The first person I met on the first day of the program at Jouvence - was Bruno. Actually, I heard him before I saw him. I was very nervous - this was a whole new career path for me - and Bruno immediately made me feel at ease and comfortable. That was just his way. Bruno made everyone feel like they were special and that he was truly interested in who they were and what they had to say. And he really meant it.

I have a very hard time believing that he is no longer here with us. I can still see his big smile and hear his gigantic laugh - and I don't think that will ever stop.

To Kelly and Max and the other members of Bruno's family - I send my deepest condolences. I am so sorry for your loss and for your pain. I will always remember Bruno with love and gratitude.

Seeing Bruno a month ago, I was once again struck by his incredible optimism notwithstanding the toll that nefarious disease had obviously taken on his diminished frame. He told everyone that day how much he loved and appreciated them. We must all be comforted, today and every time we think of him, by those unforgettable positive moments he shared with us throughout the years. Thank you, Bruno.

To Bruno's Team,
Thank you for posting such a beautiful tribute to a man who has inspired me for many years. As I read the words here, I smiled and cried because that is what Bruno did... He reminded me to be present in the moment and to not be shy to share who I was. I met Bruno when Iwas a student in CRLT when he came in as a guest speaker and many years later I was blessed to be his colleague at CCS.
Bruno helped me to become a better community leader and person.
I am sending Kelly and Max a big hug. Bruno spoke about you everyday and always about how blessed he was to have you. Through my smiley tears, I am sending all who knew and love him a big hug. And 3 kisses!
