COLEMAN HASTINGS, Edna May
April 26, 1924 - March 29, 2013
Predeceased by her mother Edith Mary Martin, her father Matthew Coleman, her husband Kenneth Hastings, her sisters Marion, Grace, and Maureen, and brothers Edward, John, Richard, and Douglas. She leaves to mourn her sister Marney (Margaret) and brother Robin, her children Carol (Brian), Kenneth (Patricia), Richard (Carmen), Clifford (Damaris), Diane, and Daniel, grandchildren Russell, Aaron, Shannon, Margaret, Kalika, Simon, Valerie, Amber and Eden, and great-grandchildren Crystal and Nicole. She was a quiet person of modest circumstances but of unusual strength of spirit. As a mother she inspired abiding love in all her children by being fair, direct, honest and decent, and by being always there to support or to discipline, as needed. She wanted almost nothing for herself, and in truth she had no real need for anything beyond her health and that of her family. Her last years were very difficult, but there were always moments of the calm happiness and interest in family that were so characteristic of her. The family expresses its heartfelt thanks for the wonderful staff at the Royal Victoria Hospital and at Saint- Margaret's Residence, and for special caregivers Stanley, Sabrina, Lauren, Pam, Sandy, Jennifer, Kate, Pauline, and Brenda, who worked with the family to help her live with her increasingly-limited physical capabilities. Thankfully she was bright and alert, with intact memory, and was truly herself right up to the end. She was born and raised in Verdun, where she married, and raised her children during their early years. She was an active member of Saint-Clement's Anglican Church, which was her main outside-the-home interest and provided a focus for her deep and private faith. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday April 2 at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex, 1297 Chemin de la Foret, Outremont, at 1:00 p.m. (with visitation from 12:00 noon) followed by burial.
