1932-2012 Nayana N. Barthakur passed away suddenly on Dec. 6 after undergoing treatment at the Montreal Heart Institute.

He is mourned by his devoted wife Dolly, son Ankur (Anne), daughter Bonnie (Albert) as well as grandchildren Jasmine and Ryan. He is also survived by his brothers and many relatives and friends in India.

He was born and raised in Assam, which he liked to describe as the Scotland of India. From humble beginnings in his hometown of Dibrugarh, he diligently worked to become a renowned professor and researcher.

After completing his master of science studies at the University of Allahabad, he came to Canada to obtain his doctorate in physics from the University of Saskatchewan and later moved to Montreal's West Island to begin a long and distinguished career at McGill University's Natural Resources and Sciences department based at Macdonald campus. Following retirement, McGill granted him Emeritus Professor status (agricultural physics). He also once served as a board member of the International Society of Biometeorology.

His lifelong quest for knowledge and a love of travel took him around the world, from the Galapagos Islands, Iceland, the Middle East to South Africa, often with detours to his native India.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday (Dec. 12) at noon, Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Homes, corner Cartier Ave./Highway 20 in Pointe Claire.
