Olga LAVALLEE Obituary

Published by Monteal Gazette on Jan. 17, 2013.

LAVALLEE, Olga (née Klem)
1921 - 2013
Died peacefully at the Jewish General Hospital on January 15. Beloved mother of Carol (Clair Callaghan) and Anne (Brian Wilcock); devoted wife of the late Eric Lavallee (died 1995). Born in North Vancouver, she met Eric in London, England, during the Second World War, when both were serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force. While in London, she also also volunteered with the "Guinea Pigs," air force crew who underwent innovative reconstructive plastic surgery for severe burn injuries. After the war, she relocated in Montreal with Eric to start a family.
Olga was a much-loved, unassuming Renaissance woman who always found opportunities to contribute to the betterment of her world. She loved gardening, nature, animals, and her summer home for many years in St. Donat, Que. She also loved people, and appreciated the best in everyone she knew.
She highly valued education and literacy (she and her sister Mary taught their parents English), and she and Eric instilled these values in their daughters. In 1989 at the age of 68, she graduated from Concordia University with a bachelor of fine arts degree. She particularly enjoyed her theatre arts courses, and appeared as "extras" in many films shot in Montreal, such as the Canadian Heritage series, until she was 85 years old.
Olga supported many charities, including World Vision, Dans La Rue, Canadian Wildlife Association, the Canadian SPCA and the Farley Foundation, which subsidizes the cost of veterinary care for low-income pet owners. She was also an active volunteer. She helped start up Meals on Wheels in her St. Laurent community, and gave her time and efforts to many other causes. She was a dedicated member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish for decades and helped organize many parish events. Olga received wonderful care at the Jewish General Hospital and she would want to support their excellent work through donations to the hospital. She bids a fond farewell to her many friends among the staff and residents of Place St.-Moritz in St. Laurent.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady Fatima Church, 875 Marcel Laurin, St. Laurent, Quebec, on Saturday, January 19 at 10 a.m. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Armstrong Funeral Home

Dear Anne and Carol,
Sorry to hear about the passing of your Mom. I have so many wonderful memories of time spent with your family. Dear Carol and Ann
Our sincere condolenses on the loss of your kind and generous Mother. There is so much history between the Lavallee and Daley families from kindergarten, to birthday parties, to New Year Eves and the good times at St. Donat. Learning to water-ski, canoe, bridge and many more memories. Your mother was always curious about life and every time I talked to her in recent years, she had a story of potential catastrophe with a happy ending. With love, good memories and sympathy. Sorry to hear about your Mom. Olga was a gentle sole. And to read her Obituary, she was certainly quiet the person. May the world have more people like your Mom.
I will remember the many summers spents on Lac Archambault, starting with the St. Laurent families building their log cabins together, we kids having great summers there, and the retirement of our parents to enjoy their special places.
Mom, Irene Westgate, sends along her condolences as well,
Judy and Irene

Olga,
You have left on another trip, a new learning experience... I, as well as many other people, are sad and find it difficult to let you go... But if we really think of you, we should not be... If we remember the joy, the glint in your eyes when you mastered a new skill, when you learned something new, when you won a game of scabble, when you saw a flower blooming or simply the dew on the grass, we should not be:it is simply another phase of your journey.
Despite the sadness, the sorrow, we should find solace in what you have taught us,in what you have given us - at leat I should -: resilience, caring, sharing, laughters, love and work done to the best of one's abililities.
As a woman, I will remember your quiet dignity, your sense of justice and equality... and the importance to learn, to «better one self» (s'améliorer, progresser, continuer).
Your «leçons», your example are living on. The seed(s) you have planted are already at work. So, for a woman of your stature (size),it is quite an accomplishment!!!
In my mind, you will always be the ressourcefull lady who had found a new role for the old classroom bell!

To your loved ones - especially Carol- mes condoléances les plus sincères. Je suis avec vous - avec toi spécialement -, par la pensée, faute de mieux...puisque je ne peux pas aller à Montréal.

Floriane
