RIVARD, Suzanne LeMoyne
1928 - 2012
Born in Quebec City on March 28, 1928, she passed away in Montreal on October 29, 2012. She is survived by her sister Claire (late Pierre Gagnon), her brother Jean (Janine Raymond), and many nephews, nieces and cousins. Suzanne was a graduate of the École des beaux-arts de Québec (1950) where she taught as well as at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal.
A seasoned artist, she received numerous awards and grants and her works were frequently exhibited in Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa and Paris, amongst others.
Suzanne Rivard was also noteworthy in her role as administrator in the world of art, namely she was Responsible for visual arts at the Department of the Secretary of State in Ottawa, Head of visual arts at the Canada Council for the Arts and Director of the Visual Arts Department at Ottawa University. Suzanne invented and implemented the Canada Council Art Bank. She also imagined and organised Trajectoires 73, a major exhibition of Canadian artists at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la ville de Paris and in London (UK).
Suzanne knew how to recognize nascent talent, and spared no effort for the development and promotion of young artists. Recognized by her peers, Suzanne won the Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2003 for her outstanding contribution. Her talent and expertise were greatly sought after over the years, as exemplified by her role on numerous committees, consultative commissions and juries.
She leaves a precious heritage to the world of art and culture to which she dedicated her life. A religious service will be held at Saint- Dominique Church, 175 Grande-Allée West, Quebec City, on November 17 at 1.30 p.m. Family members will receive condolences at the church from 1.00 p.m.
