Laurie WALKER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 15 to Feb. 17, 2011.
1962-2011 Passed away suddenly in her studio February 11. 2011 after a lengthy illness. Beloved daughter of Evelyn and Lorne Walker, cherished sister of Joyce (Anthony Steed), and Carol (Mario Morelli). Adored Aunt of Rachel, Evan, Bronwyn, Avery and Grace Steed, and Monika and Tess Morelli.

Laurie was a brilliant artist, a talented painter and a prominent member of the Quebec contemporary art community. Her works and installations were shown, and remain, in museums and galleries across Canada and overseas. Some rest in private collections. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Mount Allison University, and a Masters in Sculpture from the Nova Scotia School of Art and Design.

She was also a dedicated researcher. Working with others she devloped an hypothesis regarding the cause of Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS), the disease that led to her death.

Laurie was a very loving, talented and intelligent human being who gave much and never stopped trying. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Her legacy is her art, her research and the gifts she shared with those most dear to her.

"If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together....there is something you must always remember.... you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think, but the most important thing is, even if we're apart, I'll always be with you" Winnie the Pooh A.A. Milne.

In memory of a sweet little girl who was our neighbour many years ago. She went on to become a distinguished artist who gave us finer things to think of.

Dear Walker family:

I was extremely saddened to learn of Laurie’s passing. Please accept my sincerest condolences.

Our friendship was very special to me –dating from our freshman year at Mt A, and then as roommates in our fourth year (the flea incident and Thanksgiving dinner are legendary) to the sight of her at 3 am at the cargo pier in Halifax awaiting the arrival of the polish ship I was on, and then following her career at shows in Montreal, Guelph, and Oakville.

I had a deep respect for Laurie as an artist – she was truly original and her work exceptionally rigorous.

I benefited enormously from her insights and intelligence. She will be greatly missed.

Our deepest condolences. Laurie's loss will be felt by so many in so many ways. We knew her as a member of our book club, a charming woman who always brought a new and fresh perspective of any book or any subject we discussed. Her insight manifested itself in so many ways and she touched so many people directly and indirectly in her work.

Deepest condolences to the entire Walker family.

Laurie was an artist in the purest sense of the word.

Through her art she always tried to help us not only understand and appreciate our world, but to delight in it.

She lived her life like that, and I know she will forever be remembered.

Thank you Laurie.

Sincerely,
zsolt
