Gabriel was born in 1937 to Betty and Joseph McCulloch, in Turweston, England. After graduating with a degree in Classics from Newnham College, Cambridge, she came to North America, spending a year teaching in Pennsylvania before arriving in Montreal in 1962. She completed a teaching diploma at McGill, taught at the Study, and spent the best part of her career teaching Latin, Greek and English Poetry at Concordia University. Gabriel is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Phillip, her devoted children, Vicky (Christopher), Miranda (Tony), Rebecca (Dave) and Joseph, her step-children, Chris, Vanessa and Sarah, her foster son, Max, her grandchildren, Ben, Oliver, Leo, Olivia, Dominic, Grace, Amelia, Jack, Eleanor, Brendan (Marnie), Ariel, Rachel, Selena, Aretha and Nicholas, and her siblings, Jane and Christopher. She is predeceased by her first husband, Neil Compton. She will be remembered for her quick wit, equanimity, love of language, literature and music, generosity, and for her steadfast devotion to family, friends and students. A service in celebration of her life will be held at St. Matthias Anglican Church, 10 Church Hill, Westmount, Quebec, H3Y 2Z9 on August 9th at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to an "underdog" charity.
