It is with much sadness that we announce, well known Armenian community leader and entrepreneur Haig (Aramazt) Markarian, passed away suddenly on Sunday August 5, 2012 in Montreal. Born January 8, 1923, in Alexandria, Egypt, Haig Markarian was the first of his family to move to Canada, arriving in Montreal in 1956. In subsequent years, Haig sponsored many family members and friends to move to Canada, making him an unforgettable patriarch. Haig married Anahid Dergarabedian from Beirut, Lebanon, in 1959, and started a family. In 1963, Haig founded Aliments Tousain Inc., a successful fine food import and distribution business. Haig's zest for life and enthusiasm for business was truly infectious. His kindness and captivating charm touched all who crossed his path. Haig lived a long, healthy, and fulfilled life, and will be forever remembered by his many family members and good friends. Haig will be deeply missed by his wife Anahid, daughter Salpy (Norayr) and son Dikran (Lina). His brother Aram Markarian (Berjouhi) and sister Arpinée Garabedian, will also miss Haig dearly and cherish the years of joyful memories. Medz-baba (grandpa) will also be remembered by his grandchildren, Sarah, Arshen, Paul-Haig, and Emma. Family will receive condolences on Wednesday, August 8, from 7:00 pm, and the funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 9, from 1:00 pm, both at the Sourp Hagop Armenian Apostolic Church, 3401 Olivar Asselin, Montreal, (514) 331-5445 www.sourphagop.net.
