1931 - 2012
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Coogan Lyons (née Hughes), who died peacefully, on the 15th of November, 2012, at the age of eighty one, after a long illness endured with stoicism and courage. Born on the 24th of January, 1931, in Saltcoats, Scotland, as the youngest in a family of six, Margaret enjoyed a childhood close to the seaside. After studies in French literature and history at the University of Glasgow, she worked in the Meteorology office at Prestwick Airport, a job she liked so much that decades later she would share her knowledge of cloud formations with her children and grandchildren. She subsequently worked as a research assistant at the ICI laboratories in Ardeer when she met her husband, Dr. James Lyons. Margaret immigrated to Canada with James and their three children in 1967. She had fond memories of her native Scotland and was always in close contact with family members there. She will be sadly missed by daughter Anne, sons Michael and John (May), and grandchildren Christopher, Fiona, Meghan, and Liam. James predeceased her by only two months. Family members will receive condolences on Wednesday November 21 from 10:30 -11:00 a.m., at St. Thomas Becket Church, 4320 Ste-Anne, Pierrefonds. A mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers of the West Island Palliative Care Residence (Stillview Pavillion) for their compassionate care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the West Island Palliative Care Residence. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Voluntas Commemoration (514-695-7979/www.voluntas.ca).
