STEWART, Dorothy Linton
In her 85th year, on January 5th, 2013, after a long illness. Born September 9, 1928, Dorothy was the youngest daughter of Thomas Shearer Stewart and Margaret Alice Gardner of Montreal and the sole surviving sibling of Margaret, John, James, Thomas and her twin Alice Johnston. She is survived by her sister- in-law Ainslie Stewart and 16 nieces and nephews. A graduate of the School of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston at which she received many awards for her painting skills, Dorothy was a committed and engaged painter and artist throughout her life. The most fulfilling period of her career began in the late 1970's when she left the family fold and Montreal and moved to New York City. In Manhattan, Dorothy sought the company of other artists and in particular the professional criticism of her peers. She remained there for 25 years working diligently on her craft. Her work has been exhibited and sold in Montreal, New York, Boston, Bilbao, Abu Dhabi, Seoul and most recently Toronto. The last chapter of Dodie's life involved a move to Toronto in 2003 where she received the love and support of family - cared for by nieces and nephews - Jane, Ruth, Andrew and Tom. Many thanks to Dr. Sandra Black and her team at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre's Cognitive Neurology Department, Dr. Carole Cohen and the Community Psychiatric Services Department, Sunnybrook, the committed staff at The Leaside Retirement Residence and Seniors For Seniors (Toronto). A service of remembrance will be held at Christ Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge Street, Toronto on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 11 a.m. Dorothy's art was her life - through it she has left us a great legacy.
