Gary STEINBERG Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 16, 2013.

STEINBERG, Gary Lorne
Rosy pinchable cheeks, custom made suits, a hairstyle that only got better when driving his convertible, a serious talent for tickling his grandchildren, an unrivaled love for his children and their spouses, and a beautiful 45-year love affair with his wife, Sharon. Gary passed away on November 14th at 9:15pm at the Ottawa General Hospital. He will be celebrated and mourned by his daughter, Jory (and her fiancee Greg), his son - Hayes (with his wife Jennifer and their children Shoshana and Ethan), his mother - Lee (wife to the late Earl Steinberg), and his brother - Ricky (his wife Carole and their children Jennifer and Jason). Gary had a diehard commitment to his sister-in-law Jane (wife to Gary's late brother Bobby) and his nephews Jesse and Conor. Gary will forever be loved, cherished and respected by his family, his friends and his legal colleagues. The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, November 17 at 1pm at Machzikei Hadas Synagogue, 2310 Virginia Drive, Ottawa (from Montreal, exit the 417 at Alta Vista/Vanier Parkway). The burial will take place on Monday, November 18 at 3pm at Pardes Chaim Cemetery 11818 Bathurst St., Toronto. What a fantastic description of Gary. Gary was my lawyer. He was ethical, kind, determined and incredibly smart. He provided the voice of reason and a clear perspective when things were out of focus. He took my fears, literally laughed at them, and made everything right for everybody, not just for me. I think of the positive impact he has had on my life often. Never forgotten and always remembered with thanks and appreciation and tremendous respect.

My deepest sympathies for your loss.

Gary was also my lawyer. He was a man who I highly respected. He was brilliant at family law. I even nicknamed him "Gary the shark". I will truly miss him.

Gary was my lawyer... what a wonderful man... my 2 year old daughter was diagnosed with leukemia and he was so caring and concerned for her. I was amazed at his kind heart and warm words and thoughts and useful advise (legally but also health wise). I was shocked to hear about his passing... too soon. Sending his wife and family lots of love and prayers. Gina Madrigrano and Beatrice xxxx

I absolutely adore the first sentence of Gary's commemoration, especially the part about his hairstyle getting better when he drove a convertible :) It was the first thing I noticed about him, and what a signature it was! I only met Gary briefly when my husband first joined the firm, but he left a lasting impression in those few moments- which clearly speaks volumes of the type of man he was and will be remembered as. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family, and please know a helping hand/shoulder/ear is extended for whenever it may be needed. May his life be forever celebrated, and may his soul rest in eternal peace.

I came to Gary at a difficult juncture in my life. More than a lawyer, Gary became a father figure, therapist, confidante, and a stabilizing force when the world was shaky. I remember his office well with pictures of Jori in Les Miserables at the NAC and photos of his only grandson at the time. Gary was a special man whose caring nature was always at the forefront. I last saw him when Cirque du Soleil was in town and Jori was singing in the show. He was beaming with pride and carrying a bouquet on his way backstage. So saddened to learn of your passing my friend, you will be missed by so many. My deepest sympathies to the family in this time of unspeakable loss. Fran Gagnon

November 17, 2013

Our family is forever indebted to Gary for the wonderful work he did in helping us get our daughter home from Iran. More importantly he was a loving kindly friend who helped us through a very difficult time in our lives. Gary always seemed larger than life and it is with great sorrow that we just learned of his untimely death.

To all his family we send our deepest sympathy.

Gary will always live on in the memories of all who knew him.
Sincerely,

Words cannot adequately describe how sorry we are at the loss of Gary. Not only was he our rock during a very difficult period but ended up a close and loving friend to both of us. We remember his soothing voice, his office full of collectable whatnots, his trademark hairstyle, comfy clogs and sense of humour. His love of LOVE is what impressed us most; his total unbridled love and committment to his family...the stories and updates over the years made him an inspiration to be around. Fond memories of our wedding, lunches and dinners and "catch up" phone calls will be with us forever. Sharon, we are here for you always and cherish memories of the last kisses and hugs we shared with Gary with you by his side. All of our love and prayers.....

November 17, 2013

Thank you for the 20 years. We have shared so much through laughter and tears. A father, a brother, a mentor, a friend, like a pair of old slippers you and I, comfortable and supporting to the end. You would often joke about who worked for who, we made a great team that much we both knew but without a doubt I must say, it has been a pleasure working for you. Like a gentle bear with the dark curly hair, whatever one needed you were always there. A brilliant man who has left his mark. I will carry you always with love in my heart.
