William Benfield MOORESVILLE William "Bill" Alexander Benfield, 84, of Mooresville, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013. He was born Dec. 21, 1928, in Mooresville, to the late Cullen Avery and Mary Jane Barkley Benfield. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War. Mr. Benfield attended Mitchell College and NC State University. He was retired from International Harvester after 37 years of service. He served 16 years on the Iredell County Board of Education, where he served two terms as chairman. He was a founding member of the Iredell County Recreation Department. He coached numerous youth baseball teams and was a member of the American Legion Post #66. Mr. Benfield was also founding member and first chief of the Shepherd's Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Mooresville Civitains and was on the Board of Samaritans International Mooresville Group. He was a lifelong and very active member of Vanderburg United Methodist Church in Mooresville, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, MYF Counselor, Lay speaker, and a chairman of the Board of Trustee's. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William Alexander Benfield Jr.; and son-in-law, Ivan D. Bowers. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lois Little Benfield; children, Debbie Compton and husband, Robert, Billy Benfield, Rusty Benfield and wife, Terrie, Cindy Rodden and husband, Chauncey and Gay Rodriquez and husband, David; sisters, Lib Christie, Barbara Dishman and Marverine Stutts; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Vanderburg United Methodist Church. The Revs. Susan German and Joe Parker officiated. Burial followed the service in the church cemetery. The family received friends Friday, Feb. 15, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Benfield Scholarship Fund c/o Vanderburg United Methodist Church or Vanderburg United Methodist Church, 1809 Charlotte Hwy, Mooresville, NC 28115.
