James Roby Asbury Jr.
WELLINGTON - James Roby Asbury Jr., 84, of Wellington died Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at EMH surrounded by his family. He was born on October 16, 1928 in Tazewell, VA to the late James R. and Fannie Asbury, Sr.
James worked for GM and retired in 1987 after 34 years of service. Following his retirement he drove the street sweeper for the Village of Wellington. He was a lifetime member of the Lorain County Beagle Club and was honored as the Beagler of the Year. James was also a member of the LaGrange Church of God, where he served as Superintendent of Sunday School and on the Pastor's Council.
He also was a member of the McDonald's Coffee Club. James enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing and beagling and coached Little League. He was also well known for his garden. More than anything James cherished being surrounded by his loving family.
James is survived by his children, Judy A. Meadows, of Wellington, Juanita (Dave) Sawyer, of Wellington, Debra (Thomas) Durham, of Wellington, Michael Roby (Karen) Asbury, of Elyria, James Daniel (Kimberly) Asbury, of Inman, SC, Roger A. (Michelle Johnson) Asbury, of LaGrange, Mary Kay (Christopher Adams) West, of Wellington, Nancy (John) Shope, of Wellington and Steven (April) Asbury, of LaGrange; 20 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Survivors also include his siblings, Elsie Lambert, Helen Proffitt, Bertie Elswick, Joe Asbury, all of Tazewell, VA, Nannie Ball, of Roanoke, VA, Oscar Asbury, of PA and Danny Asbury of Roanoke, VA.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Edith Louise; and brothers, Melvin and John Asbury.
Friends and family will be received on Sunday, November 25 from 3-7 p.m. at Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 South Main St., Wellington. Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the LaGrange Church of God, 502 North Center St., LaGrange with Rev. Danny Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Wellington.
