AMHERST TOWNSHIP - Andrew John Majkut, 94 years of age, and a resident of Amherst Township, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Lifecare Nursing Center in Elyria following a brief illness.
He was born June 20, 1917 in Century, Pennsylvania. Andrew was raised in Pennsylvania before moving to Lorain and was a honorary military graduate of Admiral King High School. He had made his home in Amherst since 1978. Andrew proudly served in the United States Army
during World War II
in the Pacific Theater where he received the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, The Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was employed at US Steel in Lorain for forty-three years before retiring in 1979 as a foreman. Andrew was a charter member of St. Vincent DePaul Church in Elyria. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and took an active role in the carnival that was held yearly by the church. Andrew was a member of the Lorain Veterans of Foreign Wars
#451 and the US Steel Management Club. His hobbies included fishing, golfing; bowling and dancing. Andrew cherished his role as father, husband, grandfather and great grandfather. His greatest joy was being able to be active with his family and all the time they spent together.
Andrew leaves to cherish his memory his sons and their wives Andrew M. Jr. and Rebecca Majkut of Elyria, Joseph P. and Karen Majkut of Henrietta Township; his daughters Barbara Yeager and her husband Michael of Snoqualmie, Washington and Christine Majkut of Elyria; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-two years Helen Mary Majkut (nee: Horvath) on October 3, 1994; brothers George Majkut and Steve Majkut; sisters Helen Kish, Mary Denka, Agnes Ramirez and Ann Schuster; his great granddaughter Lindsay Majkut in 2006; and by his parents Stephen and Mary Majkut.
Friends may call Monday, January 2, 2012 from 1 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing Prayers will be held Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 9:15 from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Vincent DePaul Church; 41295 North Ridge Road, East, Elyria. The Rev. Fr. James Ols, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
