LORAIN - Christy Anthony D'Andrea, age 91, of Lorain passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Adult Care by Sandy, in Lorain.
Christy was born on November 26, 1921 in Lorain, Ohio to Joseph and Philomina (nee Jacovetti) D'Andrea and was a 1940 graduate of Lorain High School.
He enlisted with the United States Air Force
on September 3, 1942 and was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant on January 3, 1946, serving his country during World War II
. While he was enlisted he received numerous training and certification that enabled him to maintain and repair all the aircraft, including the P-51, which was being utilized by the United States Air Force. He received his training at Casey Jones School of Aeronautics, Wright Patterson Flight School, McDonald Douglas School of Aeronautic Mechanics, in New York, Curtiss-Wright Airplane Division School (gaining certification to work on the P-40), Allison Division General Motors
Technical Training and the Bell Airplane School in Fort Myers, Florida.
He was employed for 35 years as pipefitter for United States Steel Corporation, retiring in 1982.
Christy was a member of the Church of St. Peter, Lorain and the Army Air Force Aid Society. A "handy man" at heart there was nothing Christy couldn't fix. Whatever the job, whether it was, plumbing, electrical, masonry, carpentry, or automotive repair he was up for the challenge. Playing the guitar and the harmonica was another talent that Christy possessed. His band even won first place on the Ted Mac radio show.
He is survived by his son, Robert (Susan) D'Andrea, of Avon Lake; daughter, Elaine D'Andrea, of Lorain; grandchildren, Robert D'Andrea, of Orange, CA, Thomas (Wendi) D'Andrea , of Lorain, Kathleen (Scott) Starek, of Avon, Michael (Aubin) D'Andrea, of Avon Lake and Douglas D'Andrea, of North Olmsted; great-grandchildren, Aniella D'Andrea, Liliana and Vincent Starek.
Christy was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Minnie (nee Presutto), in 2011; son, Joseph; and his parents, Joseph and Philomina.
The D'Andrea family will receive friends on Thursday, July 25, 2013 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst. Closing prayers will be said on Friday, July 26th. at 9:00 a.m. in the funeral center followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. Rev. Fr. Craig Hovanec, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
