Wakeman - Dale E. Zudell, 58, of Wakeman, died Thursday, July 18, 2013, at his home after a courageous and lengthy illness.
He was born April 23, 1955, in Lorain, and had resided in Wakeman for the past 14 years. He had also lived in Amherst and Grafton.
Dale attended Southview High School in Lorain for two years and graduated from Western Reserve High School in Collins, EHOVE Joint Vocational School and Terra Tech in Fremont.
Dale worked at US Steel in Lorain in the Rolling Mill for 14 years. He was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Oberlin where he ushered, attended the Men's Wednesday Breakfast Group and helped with projects around the church. He also purchased donkeys for the live Nativity display at the church during Christmas.
Dale was a big fan of the cartoon series "The Flintstones", having a collection of Flintstones memorabilia and was known to dress as Fred Flintstone at Halloween and other events. Even during his illness, he had a replica of Fred Flintstone's car constructed and put around his wheelchair as he pedaled around during parades or church events.
He was a member of the Western Reserve High School Band Boosters, was a Baton Dad and a member of the Lorain County Beekeepers Association.
Dale enjoyed hunting, being outdoors and fishing at his pond on his property at home. He also had a great sense of humor and loved to play pranks on his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary C. Zudell (nee Gallagher); daughters, Kara D. Zudell of Lorain, Katherine M. Honney (Donn) of Elyria and Jillien A. Zudell of Chicago, Ill.; grandson, Donn "Baba Looey" Honney Jr.; brother, J. Keith Zudell of Gallup, N.M.; sisters, Myra Barrett (Denny) of Akron, Kathryn Zudell of Kipton and Ruth Ann Bowman (David) of Florida; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends, Jim and Alexis Toole and Al and Debbie Senko.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth K. Zudell; and parents, Joseph B. and Mary Lou Zudell (nee Cooper).
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of funeral services at 5:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 310 W. Lorain St, Oberlin. The Rev. Joshua Moldenhauer, pastor, will officiate. Cremation will follow.
