Donald Lee Whitman AMHERST — Donald Lee Whitman, 75 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Sunday, March 31, 2013 surrounded by his family at his home following a brief illness.
He was born February 18, 1938 in Elyria, Ohio. Donald was a lifetime resident of Amherst. He proudly served in the United States Marines during the Vietnam conflict both in Vietnam as a combat marine and state side as a M.P. His service was distinguished by his reception of the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 bronze stars
; Presidential Unit Citation; the Vietnam Campaign Medal; the Merritourous Mast Company 2nd Battalion Marine Regiment; and the Merritourious Mast Company 2nd Battalion 55th. Marine Regimen. Donald was an electrician by trade and worked as an independent contractor for many years. He was employed at Pfaudler Company in Elyria for sixteen years and also at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain for seven years before retiring. He was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ in Amherst. Donald was a member of the Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post #1662 and the American Legion Post #118 both of Amherst. His hobbies included golfing, playing chess and traveling, and found particular pleasure in the trips that he took with his wife out west. He loved socializing with his good friends at the American Legion and was known for his great sense of humor and love of banana splits, however it was His role as a grandfather that brought him his greatest joy.
Donald leaves to cherish his memory his wife of forty-five years Judy Ann Whitman (nee: Custer); his daughters Lauri Hubach and her husband Ron, and Debbie Whitman all of Amherst; grandchildren Michael Wearsch, Donald Lee Wearsch, Jared Hubach, Rebecca Hubach; his brothers and their wives John and Judith Whitman of Oberlin, Robert and Joan Whitman of Amherst; his sister Laura Kimmel of Wellington; as well as many nieces and nephews .
He was preceded in death by his brother Richard Whitman; his father Anthony Whitman and mother Laura Talbot (nee: Nooney) .
Friends may call Wednesday, April 3, 2013, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Mark Pemberton, pastor of St. Peter United Church of Christ, will officiate. Full Military Honors will be provided by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
