Helen Barbara Alu Helen Barbara Alu (nee Rabatin), 85, of Lorain, died Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Mercy Regional Medical Center after a short illness. She was born February 27, 1928 in Lakewood, OH and had been a Lorain resident for the past 62 years moving from Lakewood. Helen had worked for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Cleveland Indians as an usher, Cosco, and was a private duty caregiver. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Lorain. She was a talented cook known for her nut rolls and also know for her athletic abilities. She participated in many sports throughout her life including: golf, tennis, basketball, dancing, and bowling. Helen was inducted into the Lorain Women's Bowling Hall of Fame. She was very lucky, going on many casino trips and once winning the Buckeye Five. Her generosity particularly was highlighted when she donated most of her winnings to the church and other organizations. She is survived by husband of 62 years, Emile Alu; daughter, Marcia (Jeff)Britt of Spencer, OH; son, Marc (Rae Anne) Alu of Avon Lake; grandchildren: Eric, Alexandra, and Michael; great grandchild, Mika; and sister, Ann Mastandrea of Shaker Heights. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary (nee Madar) Rabatin; brother, Michael Rabatin; and sisters, Elizabeth Gatti and Mary Jorgensen. Friends may call Thursday, April 25, 2013 from 11:00 am until the time of the memorial service at 12 Noon at the Dombrowski-Riddle Funeral Home, 1939 Oberlin Ave. Lorain, OH 44052. Father Craig Hovanec will officiate.
