Hugh Irving Damon
AMHERST – Hugh Irving Damon, 89 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014, at Amherst Manor Nursing Home following a brief illness.
Hugh was born August 27, 1924 in Gerry, NY. He was raised in New York before entering the United States Navy
. He proudly served his country during WWII
as part of the D Day invasion and experienced his landing craft being sunk beneath him. Hugh had made his home in Amherst since 1971.
Hugh was employed at the Pepsi Cola Plant for over thirty-five years retiring as a plant superintendent. He loved to play bingo and enjoyed wintering in Florida with his wife Julia for over twenty years.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of sixty-nine years Julia Grace Damon (nee: Foster); his daughter Janet (Ronald) Linn of Amherst; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; his sister Jean Damon of Strongsville; as well as her niece Sherry Wallace.
Hugh was preceded in death by his daughter Susanne Groot in 1991; and his parents Carl and Grace Damon (nee: Ireland).
Friends may call Tuesday, June 3, 2014, from 6-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 4 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. David Plant, pastor of St. Peter United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will follow at Crownhill Cemetery, Amherst, Ohio.
