James E. Tansey Sr., 94, of Brownhelm Twp., died Thursday, February 21, 2013 at Norwalk Memorial Home after a short illness.
He was born December 28, 1918 in Brownhelm Twp. where he had been a life long resident.
James was a veteran of the United States Army
serving in the 5th Armored Division under General George S. Patten during World War II
. He earned 5 Battle Stars in the European Theater, including the battle of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge.
He worked for 43 years in engineering and sales for Perry Fay, Parker Hannifin, and Elyria Manufacturing, retiring in 1980.
James was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Vermilion where he had been a life long active member. He was a 50 year member of the Vermilion Grange, a member of the AMVETS Post #22; American Legion Post #397; and a founding member of the Lucy Idol School. He enjoyed nature, Bee Keeping, overcoming challenges when it came to fixing or building, and was know for his great sense of humor.
He is survived by his daughters, Martha (Bob) Foltz of Deshler and Teresa (Reid) Caldwell of Athens; son, James (Mary) Tansey, Jr. of Wakeman, Nelson (Dianne) Tansey of Kalamazoo, MI, and Martin (Suzanne) Tansey of Lorain, 17 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and brother, Michael Tansey of Wakeman.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Berneita L. (nee Ferber) Tansey in 2006; parents, Martin and Anna (nee Strehle) Tansey; sister, Margaret Shafts, and brothers, Frank, George, Charles and Robert Tansey.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street Vermilion Ohio where the Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military honors at 7 pm. Prayers will be said at the funeral home at 9:00 am on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013 followed by a 9:30 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion. The Reverend Ronald Brickner will officiate. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.
