LORAIN - John Philip McKiel, 85 years of age, and a resident of Lorain, passed away Monday, January 2, 2012 at New Life Hospice Residential Center following a brief illness.
He was born in Everett, Massachusetts on September 16, 1926. John was raised in Massachusetts before moving to Lorain in 1958.
John proudly served in the United States Navy
during World War II
in the Atlantic Theater and was a participant in the D-day Invasion at the beaches of Normandy. He was employed at the Lorain Ford Motor Corporation for forty-two years before retiring as an inspector. He loved to maintain a pristine yard. John also enjoyed watching sports as well as an occasional fishing trip.
John leaves to cherish his memory his sons John P. and his wife Elinor McKiel of Lorain, Joseph P. and his wife Debbie McKiel of Lorain, Judson R. McKiel of Lorain; his daughter and her husband Jane and William Dowell of Elyria; daughter-in-law Madalyn McKiel of Lorain; nine grandchildren; several great grandchildren; sisters Frances Nicoletta of Greenville, North Carolina, Marilyn Delruyun of Powder Springs, Georgia, and Helen Frazzoni of Sommerville, Massachusetts.
He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-four years Helen McKiel (nee: Risteen) in 1991; son James Earl McKiel in 1992; brothers William and Ralph McKiel; and by his parents Harold and Mable McKiel (nee: Hosford).
Friends may call Wednesday, January 4, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 6 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Life Hospice Center, 5255 N. Abbe Road, Elyria, OH 44035.
