Kathleen Claire Diaz
TOLEDO – Kathleen Claire Diaz (nee: Abraham), 67 years of age, and a resident of Toledo, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at her home surrounded by her family.
Kathy was born July 1, 1946 in Lorain, Ohio. She was raised in the Lorain and Amherst area.
Kathy was employed at Nordson Corporation in Amherst for twenty-four years. While working she met and married the love of her life Ernie Diaz. They then "Retired" to Vieques, Puerto Rico where Kathy became the 1st. woman ferry captain that the Port Authority ever had. She quickly gained the love and respect of the entire island. Kathy loved life and lived it to the fullest, taking on many challenges, excelling at all. She was known to have a caring heart, Kathy was always helping people. Her great love of animals and nature was contagious. She was on the board of the Vieques Humane Society. Anyone that was around Kathy for any length of time learned valuable life lessons. She taught piano, scuba diving and enjoyed helping people with their taxes. She was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst.
Survivors include her devoted husband of forty years Ernesto "Ernie" Diaz; her son and his wife Christopher Michael and Stephanie Diaz of Cincinnati; her grandchildren Drew and Kayla; her sister and her husband Jane and James Krase of Amherst; her brother in law Jim Krase and three nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph James and Eileen Abraham (nee: Deidrich).
Friends may call Friday, May 16, 2014, from 5-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral Services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.
Ernie and Holly would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Kathy's caregivers whose love and support made it possible these past three years to give Kathy the very best care which she so deeply deserved. We thank the exemplary staff of Heartland Hospice who went above and beyond to help us in so many ways.
