Leonard Richard Alessio

LORAIN - Leonard Richard Alessio, 73 years of age, and a resident of Lorain, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2011, at Lakewood Hospital following a sudden illness.
He was born October 19, 1937, in New Eagle, Pennsylvania. As a young boy, Leonard moved to Lorain. He had lived in San Diego, California for two years then resided in Houston Texas for two years before moving back to Lorain where he had made his home since 1946. Leonard served in the United States Army and was a member of the National Guard. He served with the Lorain County Sheriff Auxiliary, serving under Sheriff Smith. Leonard was a 32nd. Degree Mason and a member of the Wellington Masonic Lodge #127. He supported his wife with his knowledge of upholstering furniture and interior design at her Showcase Interior Decorating Company. Leonard loved music, and enjoyed playing the banjo and the guitar. His hobbies included caining furniture, golf, bowling and loved being industries and working with his hands. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren's events.
Survivors include his loving wife of forty-three years Caryl Elaine Alessio (nee: Krieg); his sons and their wives Kevin and Casey Alessio of Vermilion, Gregory and Melissa Alessio of Grafton; his daughters Kim Smith and her husband Dan of Amherst; Randi Robey of Lorain; his grandchildren Dominic and Angela Alessio, Danny and Cortney Smith; his brother and his wife Ernie and Kathy Alessio of Avon.
He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Jeff Robey; and his parents Ernest and Julia Alessio (nee: Pontier).
Friends may call Sunday, August 14, 2011, from 4 - 8 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 15, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. N. James Greenawalt, will officiate. Burial will be held privately by the family at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township. Military honor will be performed by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
