AMHERST - Leroy Edward Kubuske, 88 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Amherst Manor Nursing Home.
A lifetime resident of Amherst, Leroy was born December 27, 1925. He was a graduate of Central High School in Amherst with the class of 1943.
Leroy proudly served in the United States Air Force
during World War II
in the European Theater. He served as an aerial gunner aboard the B-17 "Little Dinah" 100th. Bomber Squadron. He was a official member of the "Luckey Bastards Club". During his service he was awarded the European African Middle Eastern ribbon with two bronze stars
, the Air Medal with three bronze clusters, the Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Leroy was a member of the American Legion Post #118 in Amherst. He was a member and served as the chaplain for the Amherst Military Honor Guard serving for sixty-eight years and had attended more than a thousand military funerals. Leroy was a 3rd. degree mason with the Stonington Masonic Lodge #503. He was also a worthy patron of the Eastern Stars, a member of the 100th. Bomber Group association, and the 8th. Air Force History Society. He was employed as a sheet metal worker for the Local 33 and Nabakowski Company and Trace Coporation for forty years before retiring in 1988. Leroy was previously employed as the safety director for the city of Amherst in the 1960s. He was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ in Amherst where he served as a former trustee.
Survivors include his son and his wife, James E. and Jessie Kubuske of Millbury; his grandchildren, Jere, Jacob, Joy and Jayna; and his close friend, Willi Koharik.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Jean Vivian Kubuske (nee: Hartsel); his daughter, Janet V. Kubuske both on September 25, 1988; his brothers, Earl and Chester Kubuske; and his parents, Steve and Grace Kubuske (nee: Martin).
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 14, 2014, at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. The Rev. David Plant, pastor of St. Peter United Church of Christ will officiate. Full Military Honors will be provided by the Amherst Veterans
Military Honor Guard. Burial will follow at Brownhelm Cemetery, Brownhelm Township.
