Maria Luisa (Velez) Sanabria AVON LAKE — Maria Luisa (Velez) Sanabria, age 87, formerly of Elyria, passed away on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at Main Street Care Center, Avon Lake, where she had resided for the past year. She was born on August 25, 1925 in Lares, Puerto Rico to the late Dionesio Gonzalez and Aramita Cuevas Gonzalez. As a young woman, her passion was being involved in San Jose Catholic Church in Lares, Puerto Rico where she rang the church bells, sang in the church choir and was a member of the Hijas de Maria. Upon her move to Ohio, she dedicated her time to her growing family, church and community. She was well known for her amazing cooking skills and devoted her time cooking for family, friends, churches and community events. She had worked at Lorain County Community College, retiring in 1993. Maria was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who was loved by all who met her. She had the amazing gift of bringing out the best in others, and had a very generous heart. Her true passion was the unconditional love for her family. She was a Godly woman who made many sacrifices so her children could experience a better life. She was blessed to enjoy her retirement years spending time with her children, traveling, gardening, singing in the choir at church and cooking. She also enjoyed dancing with her late husband, Ernesto, to their favorite Latin ballads and going on their annual trips to Puerto Rico and Put-In-Bay. She is survived by her children, Gloria (Art) Wragg, of Lorain, OH, Susi (Rocco) Ybarra, of Bossier City, LA, Frank (Carmen) Velez, of Beverly Hills, FL, Ismael (Marilyn) Velez, of Amherst, OH, Noelia (David) Nodal, of Amherst, OH, Betsy (Bruce) Neubauer, of Elyria, OH, and Lisa (Mike) Satonick, of Avon, OH; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 42 years, Ismael Velez, Sr; her second husband of 18 years, Ernesto Sanabria; her parents, and her siblings, Eusebio, Juan, Maria, Isabel, Otilia and Adela. The Sanabria family will receive friends on Saturday, April 27th from 9:00 – 11:30 a.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst, where funeral services will be conducted following the visitation at 11:30 a.m. Pastor Gilbert Silva, of House of Praise Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.
