Norman R. Alten
AVON LAKE – Norman R. Alten, age 80, of Avon Lake passed away Monday, May 5, 2014 at Mercy New Life Hospice in Lorain. He was born September 12, 1933 in Avon Lake to Harry J. and Florence A. (Nagel) Alten.
Norman was a graduate of Avon Lake High School. He was a member of the Avon Lake Hall of Fame 1950-1951 football team. As a young man, he worked at Powell's Turkey Farm. He then went into construction working for Klingshirn Builders, GNB Builders (part owner), and retiring as Construction Superintendent at Shore West Construction. He was a member of the National Grape Co-op, raising Concord Grapes on the Alten family farm where he also loved having a large garden every year.
On April 30, 1960 at St. Procop Church in Cleveland, he married his wife of 54 years, Edith L. (nee Ruffing) who survives along with their five children Mark R. of Grafton, Laura J., Lisa A. (Martin) Marinchak, Christine L. (Greg Dukeman), all of Avon Lake and Michael N. (Shauna) of Sheffield Lake; sister Mary (Raymond) Vorisek of Avon Lake; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harry (1964) and Florence (1963); sister and brother-in-law Lillian and Alvin McNelly; brother and sister-in-law Russell and Barbara Alten.
Family will receive friends from 4pm-9pm, Thursday, May 8 at the Busch Funeral Home, 32000 Detroit Road, Avon. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10am Friday at Holy Spirit Church, 410 Lear Road, Avon Lake (please meet at the church).
