Sterling 'Shorty' Behnke
ELYRIA - Sterling "Shorty" Behnke, 83 years old, of Elyria, Ohio, died on Friday, May 17, 2013 at Mercy Hospital Emergency Room in Lorain, Ohio.
Mr. Behnke was born on August 21, 1929 in Elyria to Frank and Alta Behnke. A graduate of Clearview High School in 1947, he served with the U.S. Navy
aboard the USS Taussig, during the Korean Conflict
from 1948 to 1952. He was employed as a lead carpenter for Dwight Smith, Yuhas Builders, Burge Builders and for Mick Mackert. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards, going out to breakfast with his son and being with family and friends. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
He is survived by one daughter, Victoria (Mark) Lesner, of Amherst; one son Richard (Carol) Behnke, of Elyria; two grandsons Richard Jr. and Gregory Behnke, both of Elyria. He also is survived by one sister Velma Gersak, of Elyria; one brother Robert (Sue) Behnke, of Birmingham; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Rita M. Behnke (Nee Kiser) in 2012; a brother-in-law, Fritz Gersak and his parents, Frank and Alta (Reisinger) Behnke.
Friends will be received at the Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland Street, Elyria, Ohio on Monday, May 20, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m. St. Vincent de Paul Altar and Rosary Society will have a rosary service at 3:45 p.m. Closing prayers will be in the funeral home on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. followed by mass at 11 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul, 41925 North Ridge Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035 with the Reverend Father Donald Dunson, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Elyria, Ohio. Full military honors will be provided by the VFW
