ORLANDO, Fla. – Achilles Christ Delis, formerly of Lorain, was surrounded by love ones when he passed on August 25, 2013 in Orlando, Florida. He was 86 years old. Best known as "Archie" to friends and loved ones, Delis was born on July 17, 1927 in Lorain. He grew up close to the family business, Delis Brothers Furniture, and graduated from Lorain High School in 1946. Archie served in the Army at the end of World War II and spent a year in Japan in 1946. He joined Army ROTC at Ohio University and graduated with a business degree. He continued his military service as a Lieutenant in the Korean War and retired from the Army Reserves as a Captain in 1967.
As time passed the family business moved to the next generation and Archie took over the operation of Delis Brothers Furniture with his twin brother Tom and older brother Peter. He eventually left the family business and managed the furniture department at Higbee's in Elyria, Ohio. Archie was equally proud of his military service and the family business. Delis Brothers Furniture provided furnishings for families in Lorain County for 67 years and he was happy and proud to be part of that legacy.
Archie retired in 1992. He and wife Barbara (Gajdos) moved to Florida in 1995 to be closer to family. He embraced his Greek heritage and was proud of his birth name, Achilles. One of his favorite hobbies was shooting pool and he competed in his retirement community's pool league. Most importantly, he was a loving and gracious family man. Married just shy of 52 years, Archie and Barbara were affectionately known as Papou and Yia Yia by their grandchildren.
A warm and sensitive husband, father and grandfather, Archie spent much of this time enjoying a close relationship with his grandchildren. Helping them learn as they grew, was his biggest accomplishment in retirement.
He was preceded in death by his father Christ, mother Kaliope (Kapantais) and brother Peter. He is survived by his wife Barbara (Gajdos), brother Tom, daughter Christine, son Phillip and wife Melodye, son Peter and wife Chris, grandchildren Caitlyn, Kallie, Emma, Amanda, Kristen, Lauren, and Connor. They all reside in Florida.
