Daniel A. Jaworski Obituary
AMHERST - Daniel A. Jaworski, age 89, of Amherst, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Saturday, September 7, 2013.
He was born in Lorain on February 6, 1924 and was a 1943-B graduate of Lorain High School where he played quarterback on the varsity football team. Dan had been a resident of Amherst for the past fifty-nine years.
Along with his four brothers, he served in the armed forces during World War II and fulfilled duty assignments in the U.S. Navy as a Machinist's Mate 2nd Class aboard the USS Comet (AP-166) in the Pacific Theater. He was the recipient of the American Area Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
Mr. Jaworski was employed as the Assistant Superintendent of the Docks and Slag Crusher at U.S. Steel Corporation's Lorain-Cuyahoga Works; he retired in 1982 following forty-two years of service with the steel producer.
Dan was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the Lorain Senior Fellowship as well as a past member of the Oberlin Golf Club.
He was an avid golfer who also enjoyed bowling in his free time.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-five years Sylvia (nee Zajkowski); daughters Marilyn A. (James) McGaffin and Susan M. Jaworski; son Daniel D. (Karen) Jaworski; grandchildren David R. Jaworski and Jennifer S. Jaworski; brothers John C. (Helen) Jaworski, Robert C. (Florence) Jaworski, and Richard C. (Rita) Jaworski; and sister Rita M. Swartz. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father John C. Jaworski (former Lorain Mayor from 1952-1962) and mother Sophie (nee Bash) Jaworski; by brothers Herman, Ralph, Jerome, and Joseph; and by sisters Dorothy Rose Turton, and Veronica A. Unger.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive in Amherst. (Please meet at the church). Reverend Lawrence N. Martello, pastor of St. Joseph, and Rev. Robert J. Glepko, pastor of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Lorain, will concelebrate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
The Jaworski Family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Anchor Lodge Nursing Home for the care and comfort that they provided to Dan during his period of residence there.
