THE VILLAGES, FLA. - George D. Whitman, 85, died Monday, August 19, 2013, at his home in The Villages, Fla.|
Born in Venice, Fla., he and his wife Gloria lived in Lorain prior to moving to The Villages in 2001.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Gloria Whitman; son, Bruce (Sandy) Whitman; grandchildren, Cherie Denman, Matthew (Robin) Whitman, Sarah Whitman and Lyndi Whitman; and great-grandchildren, Kaitlan, Kerri, Rachel, Samantha, Joshua Whitman, Carson Denman, Kassandra Pincura, Mason Gallagher and Landon Zolnai.
Mr. Whitman served as a U.S. Air Force sergeant during WWII. Sgt. Whitman retired from the Lorain Police Department Detective Bureau in 1982. As a policeman, he escorted nationally known notables: John F. Kennedy (U.S. President), Rosalynn Carter (First Lady), Scott Carpenter (astronaut), Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. (U.S. Senator & U.N. Ambassador), Nelson Rockefeller (U.S. Vice President & N.Y. Governor), Hubert Humphrey (Senator, Presidential candidate), Frank Lausche (Senator), Morris "Mo" Udall (Senator, Presidential candidate), Mike DiSalle and William O'Neill (both Ohio Governors), and comedian/actors Danny Thomas and George Jessell.
His post-retirement occupations were Lorain County Prosecutor Office Investigator, Lorain County Sheriff Department Process Server, Ohio Turnpike Toll Collector and Lorain Municipal Court Bailiff. He enjoyed fishing, boating, dancing and softball.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 28, at Hope Lutheran Church, The Villages, Fla. Burial will be in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.
