VERMILION - James E. McGuirk, 84, of Vermilion, died Thursday, January 9, 2014 at Mercy Regional Medical Center after a short illness.|
James was born February 22, 1929 in McKeesport, Pa. and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 60 years moving from Pa.
He was a veteran of the US Navy serving on the USS Tortuga during the Korean Conflict.
James worked as a truck driver for Ohio Bulk Trucking for 13 years, retiring in 2002. He had also worked for American Ship Building Co., Lorain for 20 years, Kishman Fish Co., and Burkhart Construction.
He was a member of AMVETS Post#22, American Legion Post#397, and the VFW Post#7576 all in Vermilion. He enjoyed gardening, guns, horses, wine making, spending time in the outdoors and with his family. James, known as "Stroker" especially enjoyed riding his motorcycle cross country with his wife, Barbara, visiting places such as Sturgis, Crazy Horse Monument, Mount Rushmore National Monument, and the Road to the Sky. They had so many wonderful and interesting adventures. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. James was a true inspiration and roll model to his children.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara (nee Russell) McGuirk; daughters, Mary (Jack) Manning of Vermilion, Tammy (Larry) McGee of Berlin Heights, Terri (Darrell) Saunders of Grafton, Sharon (Emery) Corbiere of Oberlin, Colleen (Mark) Loudy of Norwalk, and Kelly Clark of Vermilion; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; brothers, Raymond and Barney McGuirk; and sisters, Mary Lou McGuirk, Eleanor McGuirk, and Dee Jurich
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elma (nee Christiansen) McGuirk; brothers, Fred, Jack, and Eugene McGuirk; and sister, Dorie McWilliams.
The family will receive friends at the Riddle Funeral Home on Thursday, January 16, 2014 from 4 until the time of a Veterans Service, conducted by the Vermilion Veterans Council, at 6:00 p.m. A memorial service will immediately follow the Veterans service at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio, the Reverend Mel Sayler will officiate. Private Interment will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery, at a later date.
