James Thomas Russo Obituary
James Thomas Russo SOUTH AMHERST — James Thomas Russo, 94 years of age, and a resident of South Amherst, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Amherst Manor Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 12, 1918 in South Amherst. James was a lifetime resident of South Amherst and graduated from South Amherst High school in the class of 1936. He also attended More Head State Teacher College before being drafted into the United States Air Force. James proudly served in the United States Air Force. During his service he navigated a B29 in the Pacific Theater with the 20th Air Born/315 air wing, aboard the air craft “Ruptured Duck” that he flew out of Quam. He received the American Theater Ribbon; Asiatic-Pacific theater ribbon with two bronze stars, good conduct ribbon, and the efficient humanity fidelity medal, the air medal and the victory medal. James was employed at Moen Corporation for forty-four years before retiring in 1980 as manager of product service. He was a member of the Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in South Amherst where he was active with the former Holy Name Society. James was an avid reader and gardener. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of seventy-one years Victoria A. Russo (nee: Lupe); his sons Jan Russo and his wife Rebecca, Tom Russo all of South Amherst; his grandchildren Megan Markus, Rachael and Anna Russo; great grandson Ben Russo; his sister Helen Taylor of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his infant son John Russo; brothers Joe Russo, Tony Calderara; sisters Adeline Russo, Theresa Kolyno, Marietta Ravis; and his parents James and Elizabeth Russo (nee: Capasso).
Friends may call Friday, April 19, 2013, from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church; 333 South Lake Street, South Amherst. The Rev. Fr. James Tezie, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst, Ohio.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church; 333 South Lake Street, South Amherst, OH 44001. The family wishes to extend to the staff at Amherst Manor Nursing Home their deepest appreciation for the compassionate and professional care extended to their family.
