LORAIN - Paul J. Heyslinger, 99, of Lorain passed away peacefully in Mercy Regional Medical Center, Lorain Thursday, November 21, 2013, following a brief illness.
He was born to John and Katlin (Née Kovac) Heyslinger April 17, 1914 in Dayton, Ohio. He was raised on Stop 7, Sheffield Township. He graduated from Clearview High School in 1933, where he was president and valedictorian.
He served in
World War II
, in the U. S. Navy as a Chief Quarter Master aboard the raider, USS Kane, APD 18, he was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with seven battle stars, American Campaign Medal with one battle star, the Philippine Liberation Medal with two battle stars, Philippine Presidential Unit Citation and The World War Victory Medal. He fought in the liberation of Attu, Kwajalein, Eniwetok, Hollandia, Admiralty Islands, Saipan, Guam, Leyte and Okinawa.
He retired from Nickles Bakery in Lorain where he was a salesman in 1979. He started working for Central Bakery in 1933. He was an avid reader.
Among the survivors are his son Dr. Paul G. (Bernadette) Heyslinger of Avon Lake; sister in law Mildred Heyslinger and nieces and nephews.
Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years Mary (née Virant) Heyslinger in 1987; his parents John and Katlin Heyslinger, and brothers John and William Heyslinger.
An Interment service will be Saturday at 10 AM in Calvary Cemetery, 555 North Ridge Road, Lorain.
