LORAIN - Richard "Dick" John Esser, 82 years of age, and a resident of Lorain, passed away Monday, May 21, 2012 at New Life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain following a brief illness.

He was born May 31, 1929 in Lorain, Ohio. Dick was raised in Lorain and graduated from Lorain High School in the class of 1948B. After graduating, he attended Fenn College in Cleveland. Dick proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS New Jersey BB62. He served as president of the USS New Jersey Veterans Association for eight years. Dick also served in the Naval Reserves for seven years. In 1976, he and his wife Marilyn started the Dick Esser Plumbing Company. He continued the daily operations of the company for twenty-five years before retiring in 1999. Dick was a retired twenty-two year member of the Plumbers Local #42. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post #1662, a life member of the American Legion Post #118 both of Amherst and the Lorain Elks #1301. His hobbies included boating, fishing for walleye, playing poker, and traveling. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Dick leaves to cherish his memory his wife of fifty-nine years Marilyn Esser (nee: Richert); his sons and their wives David and Chris Esser of Lorain, James and Wendy Esser of Amherst; his daughter and her husband Kathy and Glen Lorah of Toledo; his grandchildren, Michael (Christina) Esser, Melanie (Nicholas) Watterson, Amy Esser, Matthew Esser and Nicholas Wardrope; two great grandchildren Kadence and Aspen Esser; his brother and his wife Raymond and Patricia Esser of Elyria; sisters Rita Dubena of Hilliard, Ohio and Ailene Matuzek of Amherst.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Kathryn Esser (nee: Mangan).
Friends may call Wednesday, May 23, 2012 from 4-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 24, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Greg Sellers, pastor of Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church, will officiate. Private burial will be held at a later date in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township. Military Honors will be performed by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
The family suggests that memorial contributions in Dick's name may be made to USS New Jersey Veterans Association in C/O John Vance, treasurer, 1541 Hayden Rd., Deland, Fla. 32724.
