LORAIN - Deacon Robert Lee Craighead, age 94, and a resident of Lorain, peacefully passed away Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at Mercy New Life Hospice Center following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Huntsville, Alabama on March 27, 1919 to the union of Robert and Carrie (Otey) Craighead. Deacon Craighead was a veteran of the United States
World War II
where he served as a demolition specialist in the Western Pacific Battles. He received many honors during that time and was honorably discharged March 1, 1946. After moving to Lorain in 1947, he met and married his wife Mary in 1952. They were married forty-one years and he took loving care of her until her death in 1993. Deacon Craighead was employed by the United States Steel Company until retiring in 1983.
Deacon Craighead was a faithful, founding member of Compassion Baptist Church under Reverend James L. Williams. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1993. His passion was singing. He began his singing career in the Army in 1945 as part of a quartet group called "The Victory Gospel Singers." He and three other very good friends, the late Deacons James Adams, Leroy Jackson, and James Patton formed a quartet group called "The Sonlight Gospel Singers" in 1985. Deacon Craighead was the final original member of "The Sonlight Gospel Singers." Their melodious voices will always be remembered with fondness as the new members carryon their tradition.
He loved his family and friends, and especially talking and singing about the Lord Jesus. You could always count on him in times of need. He was very passionate about his duties and other services rendered to the church, his family and friends.
He is survived by his daughter, Betty Odom (Sam); granddaughter, Stephanie Reynolds (Dwayne), all of Lorain; his sister, Lillie Mae Williams (96), who resides in Huntsville, Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends who stood by his side; Mr. & Mrs. Mark Smith and very dear friend, Mattie Bright, who will dearly miss him.
Friends may call Monday, November 25, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 p.m. at Compassion Baptist Church at 520 W 22nd St., Lorain, with Rev. James L. Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Avon. Professional arrangements entrusted to Brown-Robinson Funeral Home, 2652 Broadway Ave., Lorain OH 44052.
