LORAIN - Robert W. Ferguson, 86, of Lorain, passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2013 at Mercy New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph following a brief illness.
Mr. Ferguson was born in Lorain on March 18, 1927, the son of the late Lee C. and Marian (nee Klady) Ferguson. A lifelong resident of Lorain, he graduated from Lorain High School in 1945. He then attended the College of Wooster receiving a bachelor's degree in education. He then received his Master's Degree from University of Colorado.
He served in the US Army during World War II, earning the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ in Lorain.
Mr. Ferguson was a dedicated educator for 37 years, at the Lorain City Schools, retiring as principal at Fairhome Elementary School in 1988, serving as principal at Hawthorne and Palm Avenue Schools, taught social studies at Irving School and Admiral King and was the guidance counselor at Masson School.
He was a member of the Lorain Elks Lodge 1301, serving as Past Exalted Ruler, F & AM Black River Masonic Lodge, past president of the Lorain International Festival, Boy Scouts as Scout Master Troop #306, Ohio Education Association, Lorain Administrators Association and National Education Association.
Mr. Ferguson's involvement in the boy scouts earned him the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award bestowed by the BSA.
He is survived by daughters Beth A (Chris) Hilko, Jacqueline J Ferguson both of Lorain, Lynn M (Robert Laney) Ferguson, of Elyria, son Jay W (Mary Jo) Ferguson also Lorain, grandchildren Bryan (Michelle) Hilko, Kristen (Sean) Colvin, Todd Ferguson, Storm Ferguson, Skyler Ferguson and great grandchildren, Hannah Hilko, Mia Hilko and Trinity Ferguson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn (nee Dolde) Ferguson in 2003 and a brother Eugene L Ferguson.
Friends may call on Friday, March 29, 2013 from 4-8 p.m. in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Philip Kunz, pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst with full military honors provided jointly by the American Legion Post 30 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 451.
