VERMILION - Walter Joseph "Wally" Metter Jr., 64, of Vermilion, died Monday, November 26, 2012 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, after a sudden illness.
Walter was born May 5, 1948 in Cleveland, He had been a Vermilion resident since the 1970's and had lived in Cleveland, Strongsville, North Ridgeville, Elyria and Lorain .
Walter was a police officer for the Vermilion Police Department. He was a member of Harbourtown Community Church. He later volunteered as a chaplain for the fire and police departments. He helped supervise Youth Alive, a Bible Study group for junior high school and high school students. He organized Pastor of the Day for students to eat lunch with area pastors. Wally preached at local nursing homes and helped families at Ground Zero as part of the American Red Cross. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, was a member of the Wart Hogs and loved being with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughters, Christy M. (Dan) Shupe of Vermilion, Lori A. (Robert) Lloyd of Vermilion, and son, Walter J. (Joy) Metter III of Fort Wayne, IN; grandchildren, David, Sierra, Shelby, Dylann, Katie, Mike, Sam and Ted.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Christy and Janet Metter, and parents,Walter J. and Irene (nee Marshall) Metter Sr.
Private graveside services will be held at Brooklyn Heights Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Harbourtown Community Church, 873 State Street, Vermilion, OH 44089.
