LAKEWOOD - Zane Udell Bourisseau, 91 years of age, and a resident of Lakewood, formerly of Vermilion, passed away Saturday, October 26, 2013, at Lakewood Senior Health Campus following a brief illness.
He was born June 12, 1922, in Northport, Michigan. Zane was raised in Michigan, moving to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and graduating from Riverside University High School in Milwaukee. In 1946, he moved to Chagrin Falls, before moving to the Lorain and Vermilion area where he had made his home for the last 30 years.
Zane proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. During his service, he spent two and a half years in Brazil as a radio operator and cryptographer. He owned and operated Amherst Versakleen and South Shore Cleaners for many years.
Zane was active in his community in leadership and at governmental levels. He served as a clerk for Russell Township and was also a chairman of Russell Township Trustees. He was instrumental in establishing the first township police department in the State of Ohio. Zane was a former member of the Lakeland Community College Law Enforcement program, and a past president of the Geauga County Higher Education Council. He was a member of the Geauga County Planning Commission, and a member and past commander of the American Legion Post 383 in Chagrin Falls. Zane was awarded the Rotary International Outstanding Achievement award in 1984. He served as chairman of the Rotary International Art and Craft fellowship, was a member and chairman of the Group Study Exchange Commission, as well as a member of the MESA Committee.
Zane met the love of his life, Eleanor Lewis in the spring of 1945 and married her January 16, 1946. Zane felt strongly that his greatest joy and blessings in his life were his wife and the family they raised together.
Survivors include his sons, Zane U. Bourisseau Jr. of Mentor and James P. Bourisseau of Vermilion; daughter, Heidi A. Houde of Lakewood; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Zane was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Eleanor Ruth Bourisseau (nee Lewis) on April 5, 2012; brothers, Francis "Ben" K. Bourisseau and Dale S. Bourisseau; and parents, Francis and Sarah Bourissau (nee Shimmel).
Services were held privately by the family.
