Adalberto Aponte Obituary
Adalberto Aponte, 87, of Lorain, passed away peacefully in his daughter's home in Long Valley, N.J. Friday, Sept. 28, 2012 following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 5, 1925 in Cayey, Puerto Rico. He came to Lorain in 1948 when recruited to work for U.S. Steel. He worked as a machinist in the Number 2 Pipe Mill. Mr. Aponte retired from work at B.F. Goodrich in Avon in 1982. He was employed there for five years.
During World War II, he was a member of the Federal Guard in Puerto Rico for the United States Department of the Interior. Adalberto was a founding member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, where he participated in the Cursillo Movement. He and his wife were involved in Sacred Heart's first Financial Committee that raised funds for the construction of the new chapel. He also was a member of the United Steel Workers Local 1104. He was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and an enthusiastic gardener.
He will be deeply missed by his wife of 65 years, Margarita (née: Alvarado Colon) Aponte; sons, Alberto Aponte, of Lorain and Harold (Annie) Aponte, of Clearwater, Fla. and his daughter Zulma (Edward) Shimkus with whom he recently made his home. He also is survived by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Adalberto was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alberto and Justina (née: Melendez) Aponte and a brother Ismael Aponte.
His family will receive friends Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain (440) 277-8164, where closing prayers will be Thursday at 8:45 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian burial at 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Chapel, 3401 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. Rev. William A. Thaden will be the celebrant. The burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
His family suggests memorial contributions to Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain, Ohio 44055.
