Andrew T. Trimmel Obituary
LORAIN - Andrew T. Trimmel, 87 years of age, and a resident of Lorain, passed away Monday, December 26, 2011.
Andy was born September 17, 1924 to Andrew and Margaret Trimmel(nee: Fonyi) in Elyria, Ohio. Andy married Phyllis (nee: Klein) on June 18, 1949 at St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Avon, Ohio.
Andy served proudly in the United States Navy as a gunners mate 2nd. class during World War II. He served aboard the battleship USS New Jersey, where he was awarded eleven Bronze Stars. He was the owner of Trimmel's Greenhouse. He was also employed as an adjuster for Allstate Insurance Company. Andy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post #1662, the American Legion Post #118 both of Amherst, and the AMVETS Post #22 of Vermilion. Andy also served with the Amherst Veterans Honor Guard for over forty years. He was also a member of the Great Lakes Historical Society. He was an avid model ship builder and was featured in the American Ship Builder Magazine where he received many awards for his models.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-two years Phyllis Trimmel (nee: Klein); his son Douglas Trimmel of Cincinnati; his twin daughters Sharon (Jeffrey) Longstaff of Findlay, Karen (Raymond) Hamker of Wakeman; four grandchildren Douglas (Victoria) Longstaff of Toledo, Carolyn (Craig) Oates of Apex, NC, Heather Hamker of North Ridgeville and Daniel (Allison) Hamker of LaGrange; and six great grandchildren and his sister Margaret Hill of Conneaut.
He was preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Margaret Trimmel (nee: Fonyi); his brothers Raymond and Edward.
Services will be held privately for the family on Wednesday, December 28, 2011. Rev. Fr. Lawrence Martello from St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst will officiate. Honors will be performed by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Animal Protective League of Lorain County; 7202 Murray Ridge Road, Elyria or St. Joseph Catholic Church; 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst, OH 44001.
